This dictionary covers the whole field of the religions of the world, with the exception of Christianity and the Bible. The reasons for the exclusion of these last two are that they have been treated in many other works of reference, and that to have included them would almost have doubled the size of this book.

Special attention is given here to the three next largest religions: Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam, in view of widespread modern interest in their beliefs and terminology. However, considerable space is also devoted to other Far Eastern religions, to the classical worlds of ancient Persia, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome, and to Celtic, Teutonic and Scandinavian religions. Judaism is referred to in detail in the post-Biblical period, and special features are discussions of some of tie beliefs and customs of ancient American cultures: Mayas, Aztecs and Incas, and also those of Australasia and Africa.
