This book is, without a doubt, one of the most interesting and complete works ever written about a sedimentary basin in Brazil. Ever since the journeys made during the years 1817 and 1820 by the German naturalists Johann Baptist von Spix and Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, the Araripe basin has been studied by many researchers from geological and paleontological institutions not only from Brazil but also from abroad. These studies demonstrate that the Araripe Basin is one of the most important in Brazil. It should be mentioned that the first Brazilian fossil figured came from this region. This Basin is also known throughout the world because of the great quantity and exceptional preservation, sometimes unique, of the fossils found there. This book was produced by Dr. John Maisey and a team of international contributors. It contains all information currently available about the Araripe basin, presenting the state of knowledge of the sedimentology and paleontology of this area. Beginning with a brief history of the first studies done in the Araripe basin, the following chapters provide a complete description of each group of fossils found, giving all available information about each species, including the diagnostic characteristics, distribution, and type material. The book also discusses the main works on the stratigraphy and paleoenvironments of the Araripe basin and presents some new information.
